Discover the Invisible Cities hidden inside your own

The Invisible Citizen explores the world of Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities through the lens of our own urban environment. Find and photograph places reminiscent of the book’s fantastic destinations, then share them with fellow travelers.

City of the Week

“Leaving there and proceeding for three days toward the east, you reach Diomira, a city with sixty silver domes, bronze statues of all the gods, streets paved with lead, a crystal theater…”

— Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities

How to play

1. Read the Novel

Immerse yourself in Italo Calvino’s incredible world and learn about the cities found only in the book.

2. Wander your own city

Walk the streets you know, or the ones you’ve never noticed. When something reminds you of an invisible city, stop and look again.

3. Take a photo

Snap it yourself, with the place as the subject. No need for a perfect shot — just the one that shows what you saw.

4. Submit it to the atlas

Tell us which city it is and where you found it. Chosen photos are pinned on the atlas and earn you that city’s stamp.
